The Fast Of The Backbiter

 

 

Once, two women observed fast. Down with hunger and thirst they had very bad stomach ache.

They sent some one to our beloved Prophet Sayyedina Muhammad Mustufa Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam seeking permission to break their fast, during the last hours of the day.

 

Our beloved Prophet Sayyedina Muhammad Mustufa Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam sent them a bowl and directed the intermediary to ask the women to vomit in the bowl whatever they had eaten.

 

The first woman vomited; half of her vomiting was pure blood and the rest half was fresh meat. Thus, half of the bowl was full.

 

The second one also vomited the same, thus the bowl was full.

It was a matter of considerable punishment to the people .

 

Our Beloved Prophet Sayyedina Muhammad Mustufa Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam told the people ;

 

" Both the women observed their fast by eating the permissible but broke their fast by consuming the forbidden"

 

Our beloved Prophet Sayedina Muhammad Mustufa Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam is reported to have said;

 

"When someone from among you keeps fast, he should neither use disrespectful language, nor should he talk ignorantly. In case someone abuses him, in response he should say that he is fasting"

 

 

The Moral behind the story is backbiting is likened to eating the flesh of your brother or sister. This is portrayed very well in the above story where the women vomitted blood and flesh. To fast is to refrain from all sins and if you hear idle gossip or slander you walk away from it saying I am fasting and the same applies to if someone abuses or slanders you , you dont retaliate back with abuse but walk away saying I am I am fasting.
