It is not as simple as saying Imam Ahmad Rida Alaihrahmah said this. The Imam goes on to give so many Ahadith and proves his words to be true.

One can view the Fatwa which starts from here: http://www.razanw.or...mid=83&page=632

The Fatwa carries on in Arabic proving the authority of those narrations. He also provides a list a great scholars who felt the same way, amongst them Imam Ibn al-Athir al-Jazari and Imam al-Suyuti RadiAllahu Ta’ala Ajmain

He has also placed an excellent reference from al-Fatawa al-Hadithiyya:

This is one of those issues which proves Imam Ahmad Rida Alaihrahmah was from Baqiyyat al-Salaf al-Salih, his opinions would match the safest opinion as prescribed by the preceding scholars of this Ummah..

Imam's point was that no one can compare - as he says himself - to the likes of the great jurist Fatima Bint Imam 'Ala al-Din of Samarqand or the proof people give of Sayyida Hafsa. The times we are living in is of Fitna, therefore we must do what is possible to avoid Fitna. From the Salaf to the Khalaf it is only a number of women we have known as writers and it is one issue the 'Ulama have rejected in agreement throughout the ages. His point was to simply relay the view that is the safest, and the safest is always the majority view of the 'Ulama.

The Imam did not believe it was wrong in itself but as he says him (quoting from Fiqh works) "Man Lam Ya'rif Ahla Zamanihi Fahuwa Jahil".

Imam al-Shawkani said it was permissible for women to write but impermissible where their is fear of Fasad - corruption, (Imam Ahmad Rida believed there is Fasad in our times).

Mawlawi Amin al-Shanqiti (teacher of Bin Baz) says there is a difference of opinion. (Book: Adwa' al-Bayan, Surah al-'Alaq)

Imam al-Hakim who wrote al-Mustadrak titles the chapter in the Mustadrak itself: al-Nahi 'An Ta'lim al-Kitaba Li al-Nisaa - "Prohibition of teaching women how to write".

Mulla 'Ali al-Qari saying that it is not correct for the common women-folk to write for fear of Fitna? Same as Imam Ahmad Rida, he says it was okay for the Salaf and not for the Khalaf. (Book: Mirqat al-Mafatih, Kitab al-Tib wa al-Ruqa)

Imam al-Qurtabi who said that teaching women to write is a cause for Fitna (Tafsir al-Qurtabi, Surah al-'Alaq)

And the list goes on...and on...and on..
